لَاۤ اُقۡسِمُ بِہٰذَا الۡبَلَدِ ۙ﴿۱﴾

1

I CALL THIS earth to witness --

— Ahmedali

I swear by this city (Mecca) –

— Ahmedraza

I swear by yonder city

— Daryabadi

I swear by this city (Makkah);

— Hilali

I swear by this land.

— Itani

Nay! I swear by this city

— Maududi

Nay! I swear by this city;

— Mubarakpuri

Nay, I swear by this city -

— Pickthall

No, I swear by this country (Mecca),

— Qaribullah

I swear by this city, Makkah -

— Sahih

Nay! I swear by this city.

— Shakir

I swear by this city --

— Wahiduddin

I do call to witness this City;-

میں قسم کھاتا ہوں اس شہر کی

2

And you are free to live upon it, --

— Ahmedali

For you (O dear Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him) are in this city.

— Ahmedraza

And thou shalt be allowed in yonder city -

— Daryabadi

And you are free (from sin, to punish the enemies of Islam on the Day of the conquest) in this city (Makkah).

— Hilali

And you are a resident of this land.

— Itani

– this city wherein you have been rendered violable–

— Maududi

And you are free in this city.

— Mubarakpuri

And thou art an indweller of this city -

— Pickthall

and you are a lodger in this country.

— Qaribullah

And you, [O Muhammad], are free of restriction in this city -

— Sahih

And you shall be made free from obligation in this city--

— Shakir

and you are dwelling in this city --

— Wahiduddin

And thou art a freeman of this City;-

— Yusufali

اور آپ کو اس شہر میں لڑائی حلال ہونے والی ہے۔

اور آپ اس شہر کو حلال بنانے والے ہیں

اور تو اس شہر میں رہنے والا ہے۔

کہ اے محبوب! تم اس شہر میں تشریف فرما ہو

اور (اے نبی ﷺ !) آپ حلال کرلیے گئے ہیں اس شہر میں۔

اور حال یہ ہے کہ (اے نبیؐ) اِس شہر میں تم کو حلال کر لیا گیا ہے

(اے حبیبِ مکرّم!) اس لئے کہ آپ اس شہر میں تشریف فرما ہیں٭، ٭ یہ ترجمہ ”لا زائدہ“ کے اعتبار سے ہے۔ لا ”نفئ صحیح“ کے لئے ہو تو ترجمہ یوں ہوگا: میں (اس وقت) اس شہر کی قَسم نہیں کھاؤں گا (اے حبیب!) جب آپ اس شہر سے رخصت ہو جائیں گے۔

and thou art a lodger in this land;

as you reside in this town;

in which you are now living

— Sarwar

وَ وَالِدٍ وَّ مَا وَلَدَ ۙ﴿۳﴾

3

And the parent and the offspring,

— Ahmedali

And by oath of your forefather Ibrahim, and by you – his illustrious son!

— Ahmedraza

And by the begetter and that which he begat,

— Daryabadi

And by the begetter (i.e. Adam) and that which he begot (i.e. his progeny);

— Hilali

And by a father and what he fathered.

— Itani

and I swear by the parent and his offspring:

— Maududi

And by the begetter and that which he begot.

— Mubarakpuri

And the begetter and that which he begat,

— Pickthall

And by the giver of birth, and whom he fathered,

— Qaribullah

And [by] the father and that which was born [of him],

— Sahih

And the begetter and whom he begot.

— Shakir

and by parent and offspring,

— Wahiduddin

And (the mystic ties of) parent and child;-

— Yusufali

اور قسم ہے باپ کی اور اولاد کی۔

اور والد (آدم) اور اس کی اولاد کی قسم

اور جننے والے کی قسم ! اور اس کی جو اس نے جنا !

اور تمہارے باپ ابراہیم کی قسم اور اس کی اولاد کی کہ تم ہو

(اے حبیبِ مکرّم! آپ کے) والد (آدم یا ابراہیم علیہما السلام) کی قَسم اور (ان کی) قَسم جن کی ولادت ہوئی٭، ٭ یعنی آدم علیہ السلام کی ذریّتِ صالحہ یا آپ ہی کی ذات گرامی جن کے باعث یہ شہرِ مکہ بھی لائقِ قَسم ٹھہرا ہے۔

or by the great father and his wonderful son (Abraham and Ishmael)

لَقَدۡ خَلَقۡنَا الۡاِنۡسَانَ فِیۡ کَبَدٍ ؕ﴿۴﴾

4

That We created man in toil and trouble.

— Ahmedali

We have indeed created man surrounded by hardships.

— Ahmedraza

Assuredly We have created man in trouble.

— Daryabadi

Verily, We have created man in toil.

— Hilali

We created man in distress.

— Itani

Verily We have created man into toil and hardship.

— Maududi

Verily, We have created man in Kabad.

— Mubarakpuri

We verily have created man in an atmosphere:

— Pickthall

We created the human in fatigue.

— Qaribullah

We have certainly created man into hardship.

— Sahih

Certainly We have created man to be in distress.

— Shakir

that We have created man into a life of toil and trial.

— Wahiduddin

Verily We have created man into toil and struggle.

— Yusufali

کہ ہم نے انسان کو بڑی مشقت کے لئے پیدا کیا ہے۔

کہ ہم نے انسان کو سختی جھیلتے رہنے والا پیدا کیا ہے

بلاشبہ یقینا ہم نے انسان کو بڑی مشقت میں پیدا کیا ہے۔

Does he think that no one has power over him?

— Ahmedali

Does man think that no one will ever have power over him?

— Ahmedraza

Deemest he that none will overpower him?

— Daryabadi

Thinks he that none can overcome him?

— Hilali

Does he think that no one has power over him?

— Itani

Does he think that no one can overpower him?

— Maududi

Does he think that none can overcome him

— Mubarakpuri

Thinketh he that none hath power over him?

— Pickthall

Does he think that none has power over him!

— Qaribullah

Does he think that never will anyone overcome him?

— Sahih

Does he think that no one has power over him?

Does he think then that no one has power over him?

Thinketh he, that none hath power over him?

کیا وہ یہ خیال کرتا ہے کہ اس پر کسی کا بس نہ چلے گا ؟۔

یَقُوۡلُ اَہۡلَکۡتُ مَالًا لُّبَدًا ؕ﴿۶﴾

6

He says: "I have wasted a great deal of wealth."

— Ahmedali

He says, “I destroyed vast wealth.”

— Ahmedraza

He saith: 'I have wasted riches plenteous.

— Daryabadi

He says (boastfully): "I have wasted wealth in abundance!"

— Hilali

He says, “I have used up so much money.”

— Itani

He says: “I have squandered enormous wealth.”

— Maududi

He says: "I have wasted wealth in abundance!"

— Mubarakpuri

And he saith: I have destroyed vast wealth:

— Pickthall

He will say: 'I have destroyed a vast wealth'

— Qaribullah

He says, "I have spent wealth in abundance."

— Sahih

He shall say: I have wasted much wealth.

— Shakir

He says, "I have spent enormous wealth."

— Wahiduddin

He may say (boastfully); Wealth have I squandered in abundance!

— Yusufali

کہتا ہے کہ میں نے اتنا ایک مال اڑا ڈالا

کہتا ہے : میں نے ڈھیروں مال اڑا دیا

کہتا ہے میں نے ڈھیروں مال برباد کر ڈالا۔

(He boasts and shows off) saying, "I have spent a great deal of money (for the cause of God)".

Did We not assign unto him two eyes

And a tongue, and two lips?

and a tongue and two lips?

And a tongue and two lips

And showed him two highways (of good and evil)?

— Ahmedali

And did We not guide him to the two elevated things?

— Ahmedraza

And shown Unto him the two highways?

— Daryabadi

And shown him the two ways (good and evil)?

— Hilali

And We showed him the two ways?

— Itani

And did We not show him the two highroads (of good and evil)?

— Maududi

And shown him the two ways

— Mubarakpuri

And guide him to the parting of the mountain ways?

— Pickthall

and guided him on the two paths (of good and evil)?

— Qaribullah

And have shown him the two ways?

— Sahih

And pointed out to him the two conspicuous ways?

— Shakir

and shown him the two paths?

— Wahiduddin

And shown him the two highways?

— Yusufali

اور ہم ہی نے اسے دونوں راستے بتادیئے۔

— عبدالماجد دریابادی

اور اسے دونوں راہیں نہیں دکھا دیں ؟

اور ہم نے اسے دو واضح راستے دکھا دیے۔

اور اسے دو ابھری چیزوں کی راہ بتائی

اور اس کو دونوں راہیں نہیں سمجھا دیں !

Have We not shown him the ways of good and evil?

فَلَا اقۡتَحَمَ الۡعَقَبَۃَ ﴿۫ۖ۱۱﴾

11

But he could not scale the steep ascent.

— Ahmedali

So he did not quickly enter the steep valley.

— Ahmedraza

Yet he attempteth not the steep,

— Daryabadi

But he has made no effort to pass on the path that is steep.

— Hilali

But he did not brave the ascent.

— Itani

But he did not venture to scale the difficult steep.

— Maududi

But he has not attempted to pass on the path that is steep.

— Mubarakpuri

But he hath not attempted the Ascent -

— Pickthall

Yet he has not scaled the height.

— Qaribullah

But he has not broken through the difficult pass.

— Sahih

But he would not attempt the uphill road,

— Shakir

But he has not attempted the ascent.

— Wahiduddin

But he hath made no haste on the path that is steep.

— Yusufali

مگر وہ (شخص) گھاٹی میں سے ہو کر نہ نکلا۔

— عبدالماجد دریابادی

مگر اس نے دشوار گزار گھاٹی سے گزرنے کی ہمت نہ کی

پھر (بھی) وہ مشکل گھاٹی میں نہ گھسا۔

پھر بے تامل گھاٹی میں نہ کودا

پر اس نے گھاٹی نہیں پار کی

لیکن وہ گھاٹی کو عبور نہ کرسکا۔

How will you comprehend what the Steep ascent is? --

And what do you know what that difficult steep is?

Ah, what will convey unto thee what the Ascent is! -

ثُمَّ کَانَ مِنَ الَّذِیۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡا وَ تَوَاصَوۡا بِالصَّبۡرِ وَ تَوَاصَوۡا بِالۡمَرۡحَمَۃِ ﴿ؕ۱۷﴾

17

And to be of those who believe, and urge upon one another to persevere, and urge upon each other to be kind.

— Ahmedali

And moreover to be of those who accepted faith, and who urged patience to one another and who urged graciousness to one another.

— Ahmedraza

Then he became of those who believed and enjoined on each other steadfastness and enjoined on each other compassion.

— Daryabadi

Then he became one of those who believed, and recommended one another to perseverance and patience, and (also) recommended one another to pity and compassion.

— Hilali

Then he becomes of those who believe, and advise one another to patience, and advise one another to kindness.

— Itani

and, then besides this, he be one of those who believed, and enjoined upon one another steadfastness and enjoined upon one another compassion.

— Maududi

Then he became one of those who believed and recommended one another to patience, and recommended one another to compassion.

And to be of those who believe and exhort one another to perseverance and exhort one another to pity.

so that he becomes one of those who believe, charge each other to be patient, and charge each other to be merciful.

And then being among those who believed and advised one another to patience and advised one another to compassion.

Then he is of those who believe and charge one another to show patience, and charge one another to show compassion.

and to be one of those who believe and urge one another to steadfastness and compassion.

Then will he be of those who believe, and enjoin patience, (constancy, and self-restraint), and enjoin deeds of kindness and compassion.

اور تو اور یہ ان لوگوں میں سے نہ ہوا جو ایمان لائے اور (جنہوں نے) ایک دوسرے کو ثبات کی فہمائش کی اور ایک دوسرے کو ترحم کی فہمائش کی تھی۔

پھر (اس کے ساتھ یہ کہ) وہ ان لوگوں سے ہوا جو ایمان لائے اور ایک دوسرے کو صبر کرنے کی اور ایک دوسرے پر رحم کرنے کی وصیت کی۔

They are the people of the right hand (and will succeed).

These are the people of the right.

They are those on the Right Hand (the dwellers of Paradise),

These are the people of happiness.

These are the People of the Right Hand.

But those who deny Our revelations are the people of the left hand:

— Ahmedali

And those who denied Our signs, are the people of the left.

— Ahmedraza

And those who disbelieve Our signs - they are the fellows of the lefthand.

— Daryabadi

But those who disbelieved in Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.), they are those on the Left Hand (the dwellers of Hell).

— Hilali

But as for those who defy Our revelations—these are the people of misery.

— Itani

As for those who rejected Our Signs, they are the People of the Left Hand.

— Maududi

But those who disbelieved in Our Ayat, they are those on the Left.

— Mubarakpuri

But those who disbelieve Our revelations, their place will be on the left hand.

— Pickthall

But those who disbelieve in Our verses, they are the Companions of the Left,

— Qaribullah

But they who disbelieved in Our signs - those are the companions of the left.

And (as for) those who disbelieve in our communications, they are the people of the left hand.

and [as for] those who are bent on denying the truth of Our revelations, they are the people of the left hand,

But those who reject Our Signs, they are the (unhappy) Companions of the Left Hand.

اور جو لوگ ہماری آیتوں کے منکر ہوئے تو وہ لوگ بائیں والے ہیں

اور جنہوں نے ہماری آیات کا انکار کیا وہی بدبخت ہیں

اور جن لوگوں نے ہماری آیات کا انکار کیا وہی بائیں ہاتھ والے ہیں۔

عَلَیۡہِمۡ نَارٌ مُّؤۡصَدَۃٌ ﴿٪۲۰﴾

The Fire will vault them over.

— Ahmedali

Upon them is a fire, in which they are imprisoned, closed and shut above them.

Over them shall be Fire closing round.

The Fire will be shut over them (i.e. they will be enveloped by the Fire without any opening or window or outlet.

Upon them is a padlocked Fire.

— Itani

Upon them shall be a Fire that will hem them in.

Upon them Fire will Mu'sadah.

Fire will be an awning over them.

with the Fire closed above them.

Over them will be fire closed in.
