وَ السَّمَآءِ وَ الطَّارِقِ ۙ﴿۱﴾
1
I CALL TO witness the heavens and the night Star --
— Ahmedali
By oath of the heaven, and by oath of the nightly arriver.
— Ahmedraza
By the heaven and the night-comer
— Daryabadi
By the heaven, and At-Tariq (the night-comer, i.e. the bright star);
— Hilali
By the sky and at-Tariq.
— Itani
By the heaven, and the night-visitor,
— Maududi
By the heaven, and At-Tariq;
— Mubarakpuri
By the heaven and the Morning Star
— Pickthall
By the sky, and by the nightly comer!
— Qaribullah
By the sky and the night comer -
— Sahih
I swear by the heaven and the comer by night;

By the heavens and that which comes in the night --

By the Sky and the Night-Visitant (therein);-

قسم ہے آسمان کی اور رات کو نمودار ہونے والی (چیز) کی

How will you comprehend what the night star is?

And have you understood what the nightly arriver is?

And what shall make thee know that which the night-comer is?-
— Daryabadi
And what will make you to know what At-Tariq (night-comer) is?
— Hilali
But what will let you know what at-Tariq is?
— Itani
what do you know what the night-visitor is?
— Maududi
And what will make you to know what At-Tariq is
— Mubarakpuri
- Ah, what will tell thee what the Morning Star is!

What could let you know what the nightly comer is!

And what can make you know what is the night comer?

And what will make you know what the comer by night is?

and what could make you know what it is that comes in the night?

And what will explain to thee what the Night-Visitant is?-

اور آپ کو کیا خبر کہ رات کو نمودار ہونے والی چیز کیا ہے ؟

اور آپ کیا جانیں کہ رات کو آنے والا کیا ہے ؟

النَّجۡمُ الثَّاقِبُ ۙ﴿۳﴾
3
It is the star that shines with a piercing brightness --
— Ahmedali
The very brightly shining star!
— Ahmedraza
It is the star shing brightly.
— Daryabadi
(It is) the star of piercing brightness;
— Hilali
The Piercing Star.
— Itani
It is the piercing star.
— Maududi
The star, Ath-Thaqib.

- The piercing Star!

(اس سے مراد) ہر وہ آسمانی کرّہ ہے (خواہ وہ ستارہ ہو یا سیارہ یا اَجرامِ سماوی کا کوئی اور کرّہ) جو چمک کر (فضا کو) روشن کر دیتا ہے٭، ٭ النجم الثاقب سے مراد ذاتِ محمد مصطفی صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم بھی ہے، جس نے سراجاً منیراً کی شان کے ساتھ آسمانِ رسالت پر چمک کر ظلمت بھری کائنات کو نورِ ایمان سے روشن کر دیا ہے۔ (الشفاء)

(It is a nightly radiant star).

اِنۡ کُلُّ نَفۡسٍ لَّمَّا عَلَیۡہَا حَافِظٌ ؕ﴿۴﴾
4
That over each soul there is a guardian.
— Ahmedali
There is not a soul that does not have a guardian over it.
— Ahmedraza
No soul is there but hath over it a watcher.
— Daryabadi
There is no human being but has a protector over him (or her) (i.e. angels incharge of each human being guarding him, writing his good and bad deeds, etc.)
— Hilali
There is no soul without a Protector over it.
— Itani
There is no living being but there is a protector over it.
— Maududi
There is no human being but has a protector over him.
— Mubarakpuri
No human soul but hath a guardian over it.

For every soul there is a watcher.

There is no soul but that it has over it a protector.

There is not a soul but over it is a keeper.

[for] no human being has been left unguarded.

There is no soul but has a protector over it.

کوئی جان ایسی نہیں کہ اس پر ایک یاد رکھنے والا (فرشتہ) مقرر نہ ہو۔

فَلۡیَنۡظُرِ الۡاِنۡسَانُ مِمَّ خُلِقَ ؕ﴿۵﴾
5
Let man consider what he was made of:
— Ahmedali
So man must consider from what he has been created.
— Ahmedraza
So let man look - from what is he created.
— Daryabadi
So let man see from what he is created!
— Hilali
Let man consider what he was created from.
— Itani
So let man consider of what he was created.
— Maududi
So, let man see from what he is created!
— Mubarakpuri
So let man consider from what he is created.
— Pickthall
Let the human reflect of what he is created.
— Qaribullah
So let man observe from what he was created.
— Sahih
So let man consider of what he is created:
— Shakir
Let man reflect on what he was created from.
— Wahiduddin
Now let man but think from what he is created!

سوا نسان کو دیکھنا چاہیے کہ وہ کس چیز سے پیدا کیا گیا ہے

لہٰذا انسان کو یہ دیکھنا چاہیے کہ وہ کس چیز سے پیدا کیا گیا ہے ؟

He was created of spurting water

He is created from a water drip-ping,

He is created from a water gushing forth.

He was created from gushing liquid.

He was created of a gushing fluid,

He is created from a water gushing forth,

He was created from ejaculated water

He was created from a fluid, ejected,

He is created of water pouring forth,

وہ ایک اچھلتے پانی سے پیدا کیا گیا ہے

وہ اچھل کر نکلنے والے پانی سے پیدا کیا گیا ہے

وہ ایک اچھلنے والے پانی سے پیدا کیا گیا ہے۔

Issuing from (the pelvis) between the backbone and the ribs.

That is issued from between the backs and the ribs.

That issueth from between the loins and the breast-bones.

Proceeding from between the back-bone and the ribs,

Issuing from between the backbone and the breastbones.

emanating from between the loins and the ribs.

Proceeding from between the backbone and the ribs.

That issued from between the loins and ribs.

that issues from between the loins and the ribs.

Emerging from between the backbone and the ribs.

جو پشت اور پسلیوں کے درمیان سے نکلتا ہے

اِنَّہٗ عَلٰی رَجۡعِہٖ لَقَادِرٌ ؕ﴿۸﴾
8
God has certainly power to bring him back (from the dead).

Indeed Allah is Able to return him.
— Ahmedraza
Verily He is Able to restore him,
— Daryabadi
Verily, (Allah) is Able to bring him back (to life)!
— Hilali
He is certainly able to return him.
— Itani
Surely He (the Creator) has the power to bring him back (to life).
— Maududi
Verily, He is Able to bring him back!
— Mubarakpuri
Lo! He verily is Able to return him (unto life)
— Pickthall
Surely, He is Able to bring him back,
— Qaribullah
Indeed, Allah, to return him [to life], is Able.

Most surely He is able to return him (to life).
— Shakir
He certainly has the power to bring him back to life.
— Wahiduddin
Surely (Allah) is able to bring him back (to life)!

وہ (اللہ) اس کے دوبارہ پیدا کرنے پر یقیناً قادر ہے۔

یقینا اللہ اسے لوٹانے (دوبارہ پیدا کرنے) پر قادر ہے۔

بیشک وہ اسے لوٹانے پر یقینا قادر ہے۔

بے شک اللہ اس کے واپس کرینے پر قادر ہے

یَوۡمَ تُبۡلَی السَّرَآئِرُ ۙ﴿۹﴾
9
The day all secrets are examined
— Ahmedali
A day when the secrets will be examined.
— Ahmedraza
On a Day whereon secrets shall be out.
— Daryabadi
The Day when all the secrets (deeds, prayers, fasting, etc.) will be examined (as to their truth).
— Hilali
On the Day when the secrets are disclosed.
— Itani
On the Day when man's deepest secrets shall be put to the test
— Maududi
The Day when all the secrets will be examined.
— Mubarakpuri
On the day when hidden thoughts shall be searched out.
— Pickthall
on the Day when consciences are examined,
— Qaribullah
The Day when secrets will be put on trial,
— Sahih
On the day when hidden things shall be made manifest,
— Shakir
On the Day when secrets are disclosed,
— Wahiduddin
The Day that (all) things secret will be tested,
— Yusufali
(سو) جس روز (سب) راز فاش ہوجائیں گے

جس دن اسرار کی جانچ پڑتال کی جائے گی

جس دن چھپی ہوئی باتوں کی جانچ پڑتال کی جائے گی۔

جس دن چھپی باتوں کی جانچ ہوگی

اس دن ساری چھپی باتیں پرکھی جائیں گی

upon the day when the secrets are tried,

On the day when all secrets will be made public,

فَمَا لَہٗ مِنۡ قُوَّۃٍ وَّ لَا نَاصِرٍ ﴿ؕ۱۰﴾
10
He will have no strength or helper.
— Ahmedali
So man will neither have any strength nor any aide.
— Ahmedraza
Then he shall have no power nor any helper.
— Daryabadi
Then will (man) have no power, nor any helper.
— Hilali
He will have no strength, and no supporter.
— Itani
he shall have no power, and no helper.
— Maududi
Then he will have no power, nor any helper.
— Mubarakpuri
Then will he have no might nor any helper.
— Pickthall
when he will be helpless, with no supporter.
— Qaribullah
Then man will have no power or any helper.
— Sahih
He shall have neither strength nor helper.
— Shakir
[man] will have no power, and no helper.
— Wahiduddin
(Man) will have no power, and no helper.
— Yusufali
تو انسان کو نہ خود قوت ہوگی اور نہ کوئی (اس کا) مددگار ہوگا۔
— عبدالماجد دریابادی
تو انسان کے پاس نہ کوئی اپنا زور ہوگا اور نہ ہی کوئی اس کی مدد کرنے والا ہوگا

تو اس کے پاس نہ کوئی قوت ہوگی اور نہ کوئی مددگار۔

تو آدمی کے پاس نہ کچھ زور ہوگا نہ کوئی مددگار

تو اس وقت اس کے پاس کچھ زور نہ ہوگا اور نہ کوئی مددگار۔

تو نہیں ہوگی کسی انسان کے لیے کوئی طاقت اور نہ ہوگا اس کا کوئی مددگار۔

تو انسان کی کچھ پیش نہ چل سکے گی اور نہ کوئی اس کا مددگار ہو گا

تو انسان کے پاس نہ اپنا کوئی زور ہوگا نہ کوئی مددگار۔

اُس وقت انسان کے پاس نہ خود اپنا کوئی زور ہوگا اور نہ کوئی اس کی مدد کرنے والا ہوگا

پھر انسان کے پاس نہ (خود) کوئی قوت ہوگی اور نہ کوئی (اس کا) مددگار ہوگا،

and he shall have no strength, no helper.

and he shall have neither power nor helper.

he will have no power, nor anyone to help him.

وَ السَّمَآءِ ذَاتِ الرَّجۡعِ ﴿ۙ۱۱﴾
11
So I call to witness the rain-producing sky,
— Ahmedali
By oath of the sky from which comes down the rain.
— Ahmedraza
By the heaven which returneth,
— Daryabadi
By the sky (having rain clouds) which gives rain, again and again.
— Hilali
By the sky that returns.
— Itani
By the heaven with its recurring cycle of rain,
— Maududi
By the sky which gives rain, again and again.
— Mubarakpuri
By the heaven which giveth the returning rain,
— Pickthall
By the sky with its returning rain,
— Qaribullah
By the sky which returns [rain]
— Sahih
I swear by the raingiving heavens,
— Shakir
By the heavens, ever-revolving,
— Wahiduddin
By the Firmament which returns (in its round),
— Yusufali
قسم ہے بارش والے آسمان کی

And the earth which opens up (with verdure),

And by oath of the earth which flourishes with it.

And by the earth which splitteth,
— Daryabadi
And the earth which splits (with the growth of trees and plants),
— Hilali
And the earth that cracks open.
— Itani
and by the earth ever bursting with verdure,
— Maududi
And the earth which splits.
— Mubarakpuri
And the earth which splitteth (with the growth of trees and plants)
— Pickthall
and by the earth bursting with vegetation;
— Qaribullah
And [by] the earth which cracks open,
— Sahih
And the earth splitting (with plants);

by the earth cracking open with new growth.

And by the Earth which opens out (for the gushing of springs or the sprouting of vegetation),-

اور پھٹ جانے والی زمین کی

اور زمین کی جو پھٹ جاتی ہے

اور زمین کی جو پھٹنے والی ہے !

That this (Qur'an) is a decisive word
— Ahmedali
Indeed the Qur’an is a decisive Word.

Verily, it is a discourse distinguishing.

Verily! This (the Quran) is the Word that separates (the truth from falsehood, and commands strict legal laws for mankind to cut the roots of evil).

It is a Decisive Word.

this (Qur'an) is surely a decisive Word,

Verily, this is the Word that separates.

Lo! this (Qur'an) is a conclusive word,

Indeed, the Qur'an is a decisive statement,

and is not to be taken lightly.

It is not a thing for amusement.

اور یہ کوئی لغوکلام نہیں۔

وہ کوئی ہنسی مذاق کی بات نہیں ہے

اور یہ ہرگز مذاق نہیں ہے۔

اور کوئی ہنسی کی بات نہیں

They are hatching up a plot,

Indeed the disbelievers carry out their evil schemes.

Verily they are plotting a plot.

Verily, they are but plotting a plot (against you O Muhammad (Peace be upon him)).

They plot and scheme.

They are devising a guile,

Verily, they are but plotting a plot.

Lo! they plot a plot (against thee, O Muhammad)

But I too am devising a plan.

And I secretly plan.

And I am plotting a plot.

And I (too) am planning a plan.

But I plot and scheme.

and I too am devising a guile.

And I am planning a plan.

And I plot a plot (against them).

And I (too) will make a scheme.

اور میں بھی تدبیر کررہا ہوں

اور میں بھی ایک تدبیر کر رہا ہوں

فَمَہِّلِ الۡکٰفِرِیۡنَ اَمۡہِلۡہُمۡ رُوَیۡدًا ﴿٪۱۷﴾

So bear with unbelievers with patience, and give them respite for a while.
— Ahmedali
Therefore give them some respite – give them some time.

So respite thou the infidels - respite them gently,

So give a respite to the disbelievers. Deal you gently with them for a while.

Therefore, give the blasphemers respite, a brief respite.

So leave the unbelievers to themselves; respite them awhile.

So, give a respite to the disbelievers; deal gently with them for a while.

So give a respite to the disbelievers. Deal thou gently with them for a while.

Therefore respite the unbelievers, and delay them for a while.

So allow time for the disbelievers. Leave them awhile.

So grant the unbelievers a respite: let them alone for a while.

so bear with those who deny the truth, and let them be for a little while.

Therefore grant a delay to the Unbelievers: Give respite to them gently (for awhile).

سو آپ کافروں کو یوں ہی رہنے دیجئے کچھ روز یوں ہی رہنے دیجئے۔

پس آپ تھوڑی دیر کے لیے ان کافروں کو ان کے حال پر چھوڑ دیجیے۔
