وَ السَّمَآءِ ذَاتِ الۡبُرُوۡجِ ۙ﴿۱﴾

1

I CALL TO witness the sky (bespangled) with the signs of the Zodiac,

— Ahmedali

By oath of the heaven which contains the constellations.

— Ahmedraza

By the heaven adorned with big stars.

— Daryabadi

By the heaven, holding the big stars.

— Hilali

By the sky with the constellations.

— Itani

By the heaven with its impregnable castles;

— Maududi

By the heaven holding the Buruj.

— Mubarakpuri

By the heaven, holding mansions of the stars,

— Pickthall

By the heaven of the constellations!

— Qaribullah

By the sky containing great stars

— Sahih

I swear by the mansions of the stars,

By the sky with its constellations,

By the sky, (displaying) the Zodiacal Signs;

And [by] the promised Day

And the witness and the witnessed,

And by oath of the day that is a witness and by oath of a day in which the people present themselves.

And by the Day witnessing and the Day witnessed,

And by the witnessing day (i.e. Friday), and by the witnessed day [i.e. the day of 'Arafat (Hajj) the ninth of Dhul-Hijjah];

And by the witness and the witnessed.

and by the witness and what is witnessed:

— Maududi

And by the Witness and by the Witnessed.

— Mubarakpuri

And by the witness and that whereunto he beareth testimony,

By the witness and the witnessed!

And [by] the witness and what is witnessed,

And the bearer of witness and those against whom the witness is borne.

By one that witnesses, and the subject of the witness;-

اور حاضر ہونے والے (دن) کی اور جس میں حاضری ہو۔

4

That accursed are the men of the trench

— Ahmedali

Accursed be the People of the Ditch!

— Ahmedraza

Perish the fellows of the ditch,

— Daryabadi

Cursed were the people of the ditch (the story of the Boy and the King).

— Hilali

Destroyed were the People of the Trench.

— Itani

the people of the pit were destroyed

— Maududi

Cursed were the People of the Ditch.

— Mubarakpuri

(Self-)destroyed were the owners of the ditch

— Pickthall

The companions of the pit were killed

— Qaribullah

Cursed were the companions of the trench

— Sahih

Cursed be the makers of the pit,

destroyed were the people of the trench,

Woe to the makers of the pit (of fire),

غارت ہوئے خندق والے

کہ خندقوں والے ہلاک ہوگئے

النَّارِ ذَاتِ الۡوَقُوۡدِ ۙ﴿۵﴾

5

Full of fire fed by faggots,

— Ahmedali

The people of the fuelled blazing fire.

Of fire fuel-fed,

— Daryabadi

Fire supplied (abundantly) with fuel,

— Hilali

The fire supplied with fuel.

— Itani

with fire abounding in fuel,

— Maududi

Of fire fed with fuel.

— Mubarakpuri

Of the fuel-fed fire,

— Pickthall

the fire with its fuel,

— Qaribullah

[Containing] the fire full of fuel,

— Sahih

Of the fire (kept burning) with fuel,

— Shakir

the makers of the fuel-stoked fire!

Fire supplied (abundantly) with fuel:

ایندھن کی آگ والے

جن میں آگ تھی بہت ایندھن والی

اس بھڑکتی آ گ والے،

As they sat around it

Behold! they sat over against the (fire),

جس وقت وہ لوگ اس (آگ) کے پاس بیٹھے ہوئے تھے

Witnessing what they had done to the believers!

And they themselves are witnesses to what they were doing to the Muslims!

And to that which they did to the believers were witnesses.

And they witnessed what they were doing against the believers (i.e. burning them).

— Hilali

And were witnessing what they did to the believers.

and were witnessing what they did to the believers.

And they witnessed what they were doing against the believers.

And were themselves the witnesses of what they did to the believers.

and they were witnesses of what they did to the believers

And they, to what they were doing against the believers, were witnesses.

And they were witnesses of what they did with the believers.

to watch what they were doing to the believers,

And they witnessed (all) that they were doing against the Believers.

اور اپنے اس کرتوت کو دیکھ رہے تھے جو وہ ایمان والوں کے ساتھ کررہے تھے۔

اور جو کچھ وہ ایمان والوں سے کر رہے تھے، اسے سامنے دیکھ رہے تھے۔

اور جو کچھ وہ ایمان لانے والوں کے ساتھ کر رہے تھے اُسے دیکھ رہے تھے

اور وہ خود گواہ ہیں جو کچھ وہ اہلِ ایمان کے ساتھ کر رہے تھے (یعنی انہیں آگ میں پھینک پھینک کر جلا رہے تھے)،

and were themselves witnesses of what they did with the believers.

وَ مَا نَقَمُوۡا مِنۡہُمۡ اِلَّاۤ اَنۡ یُّؤۡمِنُوۡا بِاللّٰہِ الۡعَزِیۡزِ الۡحَمِیۡدِ ۙ﴿۸﴾

8

They had no other reason for hating them except that they believed in God the mighty, worthy of praise,

— Ahmedali

And what did they dislike from the Muslims, except that the Muslims accepted faith in Allah the Most Honourable, the Most Praiseworthy?

— Ahmedraza

And they persecuted them for naught save that they believed in Allah, the Mighty, the Praiseworthy

— Daryabadi

They had nothing against them, except that they believed in Allah, the All-Mighty, Worthy of all Praise!

— Hilali

They begrudged them only because they believed in God the Almighty, the Praiseworthy.

— Itani

Against these they had no grudge except that they believed in Allah, the Most Mighty, the Most Praiseworthy,

— Maududi

And they had no fault except that they believed in Allah, the Almighty, Worthy of all praise!

— Mubarakpuri

They had naught against them save that they believed in Allah, the Mighty, the Owner of Praise,

— Pickthall

and their revenge on them was only because they believed in Allah, the Almighty, the Praised,

— Qaribullah

And they resented them not except because they believed in Allah, the Exalted in Might, the Praiseworthy,

— Sahih

And they did not take vengeance on them for aught except that they believed in Allah, the Mighty, the Praised,

— Shakir

whom they hated for no other reason than that they believed in God, the Almighty, the Praiseworthy,

— Wahiduddin

And they ill-treated them for no other reason than that they believed in Allah, Exalted in Power, Worthy of all Praise!-

— Yusufali

اور انہوں نے ان (ایمان والوں) میں اور کیا عیب پایا تھا بجز اس کے کہ وہ اللہ پر ایمان لے آئے تھے جو زبردست ہے سزاوار حمد ہے

— عبدالماجد دریابادی

اور انہیں مومنوں کی یہی بات بری لگتی تھی کہ وہ اللہ پر ایمان لائے تھے جو ہر چیز پر غالب اور قابل ستائش ہے

— عبدالرحمٰن کیلانی

اور انھوں نے ان سے اس کے سوا کسی چیز کا بدلہ نہیں لیا کہ وہ اس اللہ پر ایمان رکھتے ہیں جو سب پر غالب ہے، ہر تعریف کے لائق ہے۔

اور انھیں مسلمانوں کا کیا برا لگا یہی نہ کے وہ ایمان لا ئے اللہ والے سب خو بیوں سرا ہے پر،

اور انہوں نے ان پر محض اس وجہ سے غصہ نکالا کہ وہ ایمان لائے اس خدائے عزیز وحمید پر

— امین احسن اصلاحی

اور وہ نہیں انتقام لے رہے تھے ان سے مگر اس لیے کہ وہ ایمان لے آئے تھے اللہ پر جو زبردست ہے اور اپنی ذات میں خود ستودہ صفات ہے۔

ان کو مومنوں کی یہی بات بری لگتی تھی کہ وہ خدا پر ایمان لائے ہوئے تھے جو غالب (اور) قابل ستائش ہے

یہ لوگ ان مسلمانوں (کے کسی اور گناه کا) بدلہ نہیں لے رہے تھے، سوائے اس کے کہ وه اللہ غالب ﻻئق حمد کی ذات پر ایمان ﻻئے تھے

اور وہ ایمان والوں کو کسی اور بات کی نہیں، صرف اس بات کی سزا دے رہے تھے کہ وہ اس اللہ پر ایمان لے آئے تھے جو بڑے اقتدار والا، بہت قابل تعریف ہے۔

اور اُن اہل ایمان سے اُن کی دشمنی اِس کے سوا کسی وجہ سے نہ تھی کہ وہ اُس خدا پر ایمان لے آئے تھے جو زبردست اور اپنی ذات میں آپ محمود ہے

اور انہیں ان (مومنوں) کی طرف سے اور کچھ (بھی) ناگوار نہ تھا سوائے اس کے کہ وہ اللہ پر ایمان لے آئے تھے جو غالب (اور) لائقِ حمد و ثنا ہے،

They took revenge on them only because they believed in the All-mighty, the Al-laudable,

They were vindictive towards them only because they had faith in Allah, the All-mighty and the All-laudable,

The only reason for which they tormented the believers was the latter's belief in God, the Majestic, and Praiseworthy.

الَّذِیۡ لَہٗ مُلۡکُ السَّمٰوٰتِ وَ الۡاَرۡضِ ؕ وَ اللّٰہُ عَلٰی کُلِّ شَیۡءٍ شَہِیۡدٌ ؕ﴿۹﴾

9

Whose kingdom spreads over the heavens and the earth. God is witness over everything.

— Ahmedali

To Him only belongs the kingship of the heavens and the earth; and Allah is a Witness over all things.

— Ahmedraza

Him, Whose is the dominion of heavens and the earth. And Allah is over everything a Witness.

— Daryabadi

Who, to Whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth! And Allah is Witness over everything.

— Hilali

To Whom belongs the sovereignty of the heavens and the earth. God is witness over everything.

— Itani

to Whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. Allah witnesses everything.

— Maududi

To Whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth! And Allah is Witness over everything.

— Mubarakpuri

Him unto Whom belongeth the Sovereignty of the heavens and the earth; and Allah is of all things the Witness.

— Pickthall

to whom belongs the Kingdom of the heavens and earth. And Allah is the Witness of all things.

To whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. And Allah, over all things, is Witness.

Whose is the kingdom of the heavens and the earth; and Allah is a Witness of all things.

to whom belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth. God is witness over all things.

Him to Whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth! And Allah is Witness to all things.

اسی کی سلطنت ہے آسمانوں اور زمین کی اور اللہ ہر چیز سے خوب واقف ہے۔

جو آسمانوں اور زمین کی سلطنت کا مالک ہے، اور وہ خدا سب کچھ دیکھ رہا ہے

God to whom belongs the Kingdom of the heavens and the earth, and God is Witness over everything.

and the One to whom belongs the heavens and the earth. God is the Witness of all things.

اِنَّ الَّذِیۡنَ فَتَنُوا الۡمُؤۡمِنِیۡنَ وَ الۡمُؤۡمِنٰتِ ثُمَّ لَمۡ یَتُوۡبُوۡا فَلَہُمۡ عَذَابُ جَہَنَّمَ وَ لَہُمۡ عَذَابُ الۡحَرِیۡقِ ﴿ؕ۱۰﴾

10

Surely for those who persecute believers, men and women, and do not repent afterwards, is the punishment of Hell, and the punishment of burning.

— Ahmedali

Indeed those who troubled the Muslim men and Muslim women, and then did not repent – for them is the punishment of hell, and for them is the punishment of fire.

— Ahmedraza

Verily those who affected the believing men and the believing women, and then repented not, theirs shall be the torment of Hell, and theirs shall be the torment of burning.

— Daryabadi

Verily, those who put into trial the believing men and believing women (by torturing them and burning them), and then do not turn in repentance, (to Allah), will have the torment of Hell, and they will have the punishment of the burning Fire.

— Hilali

Those who tempt the believers, men and women, then do not repent; for them is the punishment of Hell; for them is the punishment of Burning.

— Itani

Surely those who tormented the believing men and the believing women and then did not repent, theirs shall be the chastisement of Hell, and theirs shall be the chastisement of burning.

— Maududi

Verily, those who put into trial the believing men and believing women, and then do not turn in repentance, then they will have the torment of Hell, and they will have the punishment of the burning Fire.

بَلِ الَّذِیۡنَ کَفَرُوۡا فِیۡ تَکۡذِیۡبٍ ﴿ۙ۱۹﴾

19

Yet the infidels persist in denial.

— Ahmedali

In fact the disbelievers are in denial.

— Ahmedraza

But those who disbelieve are engaged in denial.

— Daryabadi

Nay! The disbelievers (persisted) in denying (Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) and his Message of Islamic Monotheism).

— Hilali

In fact, those who disbelieve are in denial.

— Itani

The unbelievers are indeed engaged in denying it, calling it a lie,

— Maududi

Nay! The disbelievers (persisted) in denying.

— Mubarakpuri

Nay, but those who disbelieve live in denial

— Pickthall

Yet the unbelievers still belie,

— Qaribullah

But they who disbelieve are in [persistent] denial,

— Sahih

Nay! those who disbelieve are in (the act of) giving the lie to the truth.

Yet those who deny the truth persist in denial.

— Wahiduddin

And yet the Unbelievers (persist) in rejecting (the Truth)!

اصل یہ ہے کہ کافر تکذیب میں لگے ہوئے ہیں

— عبدالماجد دریابادی

بلکہ کافر تو جھٹلانے میں لگے ہوئے ہیں

— عبدالرحمٰن کیلانی

بلکہ وہ لوگ جنھوں نے کفر کیا، جھٹلانے میں لگے ہوئے ہیں۔

بلکہ کافر جھٹلا نے میں ہیں

لیکن یہ کفار جھٹلانے ہی میں لگے رہیں گے۔

لیکن یہ کافر جو ہیں یہ جھٹلانے ہی میں لگے رہیں گے۔

لیکن کافر (جان بوجھ کر) تکذیب میں (گرفتار) ہیں

اس کے باوجود کافر لوگ حق کو جھٹلانے میں لگے ہوئے ہیں۔

بلکہ ایسے کافر (ہمیشہ حق کو) جھٹلانے میں (ہی کوشاں رہتے) ہیں،

Nay, but the unbelievers still cry lies,

Indeed the faithless dwell in denial,

In fact, the disbelievers had always rejected (Our revelations).

وَّ اللّٰہُ مِنۡ وَّرَآئِہِمۡ مُّحِیۡطٌ ﴿ۚ۲۰﴾

20

But God surrounds them from all sides.

— Ahmedali

And Allah is after them, has them surrounded.

— Ahmedraza

Whereas Allah is, from behind them, Encompassing.

— Daryabadi

And Allah encompasses them from behind! (i.e. all their deeds are within His Knowledge, and He will requite them for their deeds).

— Hilali

And God encloses them from beyond.

— Itani

although Allah surrounds them.

— Maududi

And Allah encompasses them from behind!

— Mubarakpuri

And Allah, all unseen, surroundeth them.

— Pickthall

Allah encompasses them all from behind.

— Qaribullah

While Allah encompasses them from behind.

— Sahih

And Allah encompasses them on every side.

— Shakir

God encompasses them from all sides.

— Wahiduddin

But Allah doth encompass them from behind!

اور اللہ انہیں ادھر ادھر سے گھیرے ہوئے ہے۔

— عبدالماجد دریابادی

حالانکہ اللہ انہیں ہر طرف سے گھیرے ہوئے ہے

اور اللہ ان کے پیچھے سے (انھیں) گھیرنے والا ہے۔

اور اللہ ان کے پیچھے سے انھیں گھیرے ہوئے ہے

اور خدا ان کو ان کے آگے پیچھے سے گھیرے ہوئے ہے۔

جبکہ اللہ ان کو گھیرے میں لیے ہوئے ہے۔

اور خدا (بھی) ان کو گردا گرد سے گھیرے ہوئے ہے

جبکہ اللہ نے ان کو گھیرے میں لیا ہوا ہے۔

بَلۡ ہُوَ قُرۡاٰنٌ مَّجِیۡدٌ ﴿ۙ۲۱﴾

This is indeed the glorious Qur'an

In fact it (what they deny) is the Noble Qur’an.

Aye! it is a Recitation glorious,

Nay! This is a Glorious Quran,

— Hilali

In fact, it is a Glorious Quran.

— Itani

Nay; but this is a glorious Qur'an,

— Maududi

Nay! This is a Glorious Qur'an,

— Mubarakpuri

Nay, but it is a glorious Qur'an.

Indeed, this is a Glorious Koran,

— Qaribullah

But this is an honored Qur'an

— Sahih

Nay! it is a glorious Quran,

It is indeed a glorious Quran,

Nay, this is a Glorious Qur'an,

اصل یہ ہے کہ یہ بزرگی والا قرآن ہے

بلکہ یہ قرآن بلند پایہ ہے

بلکہ وہ ایک بڑی شان والا قرآن ہے۔
