عَبَسَ وَ تَوَلّٰۤی ۙ﴿۱﴾

1

HE FROWNED AND turned away,

— Ahmedali

He frowned and turned away.

He frowned and turned away.

(The Prophet (Peace be upon him)) frowned and turned away,

— Hilali

He frowned and turned away.

He frowned and turned away

— Maududi

2

Because a blind man came to him.

Because there came Unto him a blind man.

Because there came to him the blind man (i.e. 'Abdullah bin Umm-Maktum, who came to the Prophet (Peace be upon him) while he was preaching to one or some of the Quraish chiefs).

When the blind man approached him.

— Itani

that the blind man came to him.

— Maududi

Because there came to him the blind man.

— Mubarakpuri

Because the blind man came unto him.

— Pickthall

when the blind came to him.

— Qaribullah

Because there came to him the blind man, [interrupting].

Because there came to him the blind man.

when the blind man approached him,

Because there came to him the blind man (interrupting).

اس بات پر کہ ان کے پاس نابینا آیا۔

وَ مَا یُدۡرِیۡکَ لَعَلَّہٗ یَزَّکّٰۤی ۙ﴿۳﴾

3

What made you think that he will not grow in virtue,

— Ahmedali

And what do you know, he may be of the pure!

— Ahmedraza

How canst thou know, whether haply he might be cleansed,

— Daryabadi

But what could tell you that per chance he might become pure (from sins)?

— Hilali

But how do you know? Perhaps he was seeking to purify himself.

— Itani

How could you know? Perhaps he would cleanse himself,

— Maududi

And how can you know that he might become pure

— Mubarakpuri

What could inform thee but that he might grow (in grace)

— Pickthall

And what could let you know? Perhaps he (comes to hear you) to be purified.

— Qaribullah

But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purified

— Sahih

And what would make you know that he would purify himself,

— Shakir

for how can you know that he might seek to purify himself,

— Wahiduddin

But what could tell thee but that perchance he might grow (in spiritual understanding)?-

— Yusufali

اور آپ کو کیا خبر شاید ہو سنور ہی جاتا

اور آپ کو کیا معلوم شاید وہ سنور جاتا

— عبدالرحمٰن کیلانی

اور تجھے کیا چیز معلوم کرواتی ہے شاید وہ پاکیزگی حاصل کرلے۔

اور تمہیں کیا معلوم شاید وہ ستھرا ہو

اور تمہیں کیا معلوم شاید وہ اپنی اصلاح کرتا

اور (اے نبی ﷺ آپ کو کیا معلوم شاید کہ وہ تزکیہ حاصل کرتا۔

اور آپ کو کیا خبر شاید وہ (آپ کی توجہ سے مزید) پاک ہو جاتا،

And what should teach thee? Perchance he would cleanse him,

— Arberry

And how do you know, maybe he would purify himself,

— Qarai

You never know. Perhaps he wanted to purify himself,

— Sarwar

اَوۡ یَذَّکَّرُ فَتَنۡفَعَہُ الذِّکۡرٰی ؕ﴿۴﴾

4

Or be admonished, and the admonition profit him?

— Ahmedali

Or that he may accept advice, so the advice may benefit him.

— Ahmedraza

Or be admonished, so that the admonition might have profited him?

— Daryabadi

Or that he might receive admonition, and that the admonition might profit him?

— Hilali

Or be reminded, and the message would benefit him.

— Itani

or he might be mindful and good counsel might avail him.

— Maududi

Or he might receive admonition, and the admonition might profit him

— Mubarakpuri

Or take heed and so the reminder might avail him?

— Pickthall

(He might) remember, and the Reminder might profit him.

— Qaribullah

Or be reminded and the remembrance would benefit him?

— Sahih

Or become reminded so that the reminder should profit him?

— Shakir

or take heed and derive benefit from [Our] warning?

— Wahiduddin

Or that he might receive admonition, and the teaching might profit him?

— Yusufali

یا نصیحت قبول کرلیتا اور اس کی نصیحت کرنا فائدہ ہی پہنچاتا۔

اور نصیحت قبول کرتا تو نصیحت اسے فائدہ دیتی

— عبدالرحمٰن کیلانی

یا نصیحت حاصل کرے تو وہ نصیحت اسے فائدہ دے۔

یا نصیحت لے تو اسے نصیحت فائدہ دے،

یا نصیحت سنتا تو نصیحت اس کو نفع پہنچاتی

یا وہ نصیحت حاصل کرتا اور وہ نصیحت اس کے لیے مفید ہوتی۔

یا سوچتا تو سمجھانا اسے فائدہ دیتا

یا نصیحت سنتا اور اسے نصیحت فائده پہنچاتی

یا وہ نصیحت قبول کرتا، اور نصیحت کرنا اسے فائدہ پہنچاتا۔

یا نصیحت پر دھیان دے، اور نصیحت کرنا اس کے لیے نافع ہو؟

یا (آپ کی) نصیحت قبول کرتا تو نصیحت اس کو (اور) فائدہ دیتی،

or yet remember, and the Reminder profit him.

— Arberry

or take admonition, and the admonition would benefit him!

or receive some (Quranic) advice which would benefit him.

— Sarwar

اَمَّا مَنِ اسۡتَغۡنٰی ۙ﴿۵﴾

5

As for him who is not in want of any thing,

— Ahmedali

For him who does not care,

— Ahmedraza

As for him who regardeth himself self-sufficient-

— Daryabadi

As for him who thinks himself self-sufficient,

— Hilali

But as for him who was indifferent.

— Itani

Now he who waxes indifferent,

— Maududi

As for him who thinks himself self-sufficient,

— Mubarakpuri

As for him who thinketh himself independent,

— Pickthall

As for he who is sufficed

— Qaribullah

As for he who thinks himself without need,

— Sahih

As for him who considers himself free from need (of you),

— Shakir

As for him who was indifferent,

— Wahiduddin

As to one who regards Himself as self-sufficient,

— Yusufali

سو جو شخص (دین سے) بےپروائی کرتا ہے

— عبدالماجد دریابادی

مگر جو شخص بےپروائی کرتا ہے

لیکن جو بےپروا ہوگیا۔

وہ جو بے پرواہ بنتا ہے

جو بےبروائی برتتا ہے

لیکن وہ جو بےنیازی دکھاتا ہے۔

وہ شخص جو بےپروائی دکھا رہا تھا۔

But the self-sufficient,

But as for someone who is wealthy,

Yet you pay attention

— Sarwar

فَاَنۡتَ لَہٗ تَصَدّٰی ؕ﴿۶﴾

6

You pay full attention,

So you are after him!

— Ahmedraza

Unto him thou attendest.

— Daryabadi

To him you attend;

— Hilali

You gave him your attention.

— Itani

you attend to him,

— Maududi

To him you attend;

— Mubarakpuri

Unto him thou payest regard.

— Pickthall

you attended to him,

— Qaribullah

To him you give attention.

— Sahih

To him do you address yourself.

— Shakir

you eagerly attended to him --

— Wahiduddin

To him dost thou attend;

— Yusufali

آپ اس کی تو فکر میں پڑجاتے ہیں

تو آپ (اس کی ہدایت کے لیے) اس کے پیچھے پڑے ہیں

سو تو اس کے پیچھے پڑتا ہے۔

تم اس کے تو پیچھے پڑتے ہو

اس کے تو تم پیچھے پڑتے ہو

آپ اس کی تو فکر میں رہتے ہیں۔

you attend to him,

to a rich man,

وَ مَا عَلَیۡکَ اَلَّا یَزَّکّٰی ؕ﴿۷﴾

7

Though it is not your concern if he should not grow (in fulness).

— Ahmedali

And you have nothing to lose if he does not become pure.

— Ahmedraza

Whereas it is not on thee that he is not cleansed.

— Daryabadi

What does it matter to you if he will not become pure (from disbelief, you are only a Messenger, your duty is to convey the Message of Allah).

— Hilali

Though you are not liable if he does not purify himself.

— Itani

though you are not to blame if he would not cleanse himself.

— Maududi

What does it matter to you if he will not become pure

— Mubarakpuri

Yet it is not thy concern if he grow not (in grace).

— Pickthall

although it is not for you to be concerned if he remained unpurified.

— Qaribullah

And not upon you [is any blame] if he will not be purified.

— Sahih

And no blame is on you if he would not purify himself

— Shakir

though you are not to be blamed if he would not purify himself --

— Wahiduddin

Though it is no blame to thee if he grow not (in spiritual understanding).

— Yusufali

درآنحالیکہ آپ پر کوئی الزام نہیں اگر وہ نہ سنورے۔

— عبدالماجد دریابادی

حالانکہ اگر وہ نہیں سنورتا تو آپ پر کوئی ذمہ داری نہیں

— عبدالرحمٰن کیلانی

حالانکہ تجھ پر (کوئی ذمہ داری) نہیں کہ وہ پاک نہیں ہوتا۔

اور تمہارا کچھ زیاں نہیں اس میں کہ وہ ستھرا نہ ہو

حالانکہ تم پر کوئی ذمہ داری نہیں اگر وہ اپنی اصلاح نہ کرے

اور اگر وہ پاکی اختیار نہیں کرتا تو آپ پر کوئی الزام نہیں۔

حالانکہ اگر وہ نہ سنورے تو تم پر کچھ (الزام) نہیں

حاﻻنکہ اس کے نہ سنورنے سے تجھ پر کوئی الزام نہیں

حالانکہ اگر وہ نہ سدھرے تو تم پر کوئی ذمہ داری نہیں آتی۔

حالانکہ آپ پر کوئی ذمہ داری (کا بوجھ) نہیں اگرچہ وہ پاکیزگی (ایمان) اختیار نہ بھی کرے،

though it is not thy concern, if he does not cleanse himself.

وَ اَمَّا مَنۡ جَآءَکَ یَسۡعٰی ۙ﴿۸﴾

8

As for him who comes to you striving (after goodness),

— Ahmedali

And for him who came to you striving,

— Ahmedraza

And as for him who cometh Unto thee running,

— Daryabadi

But as to him who came to you running.

— Hilali

But as for him who came to you seeking.

— Itani

But he who comes to you running,

— Maududi

But as for him who came to you running,

— Mubarakpuri

But as for him who cometh unto thee with earnest purpose

— Pickthall

And to him who came to you eagerly

— Qaribullah

But as for he who came to you striving [for knowledge]

— Sahih

And as to him who comes to you striving hard,

— Shakir

but as for one who comes to you, eagerly

— Wahiduddin

But as to him who came to thee striving earnestly,

— Yusufali

اور جو شخص آپ کے پاس دوڑتا ہوا آتا ہے

— عبدالماجد دریابادی

مگر جو شخص کوشش کرکے آپ کے پاس آیا ہے

— عبدالرحمٰن کیلانی

اور لیکن جو کوشش کرتا ہوا تیرے پاس آیا۔

اور وہ جو تمہارے حضور ملکتا (ناز سے دوڑتا ہوا) آتا

اور جو تمہارے پاس شوق سے آتا ہے

اور وہ جو آپ ﷺ کے پاس دوڑتا ہوا آیا ہے۔

اور وہ جو آپ کے پا س (خود طلبِ خیر کی) کوشش کرتا ہوا آیا،

And he who comes to thee eagerly

— Arberry

But as for someone who comes hurrying to you,

— Qarai

As for the one who comes to you earnestly (striving for guidance).

— Sarwar

وَ ہُوَ یَخۡشٰی ۙ﴿۹﴾

9

And is also fearful (of God),

— Ahmedali

And whereas he fears,

— Ahmedraza

And he feareth'-

— Daryabadi

And is afraid (of Allah and His Punishment),

— Hilali

In awe.

— Itani

and fears (Allah),

— Maududi

And is afraid.

— Mubarakpuri

And hath fear,

— Pickthall

and fearfully,

— Qaribullah

While he fears [Allah],

— Sahih

And he fears,

— Shakir

and in awe of God

— Wahiduddin

And with fear (in his heart),

— Yusufali

اور ہو خشیت رکھتا ہے

— عبدالماجد دریابادی

اور وہ ڈرتا ہے

— عبدالرحمٰن کیلانی

اور وہ ڈر رہا ہے۔

— عبدالسلام بھٹوی

اور وہ ڈر رہا ہے

— احمد رضا خان

اور وہ خدا سے ڈرتا بھی ہے

— امین احسن اصلاحی

اور اس کے دل میں خشیت بھی ہے۔

اور (خدا سے) ڈرتا ہے

اور وه ڈر (بھی) رہا ہے

اور وہ دل میں اللہ کا خوف رکھتا ہے۔

اور وہ ڈر رہا ہوتا ہے

اور وہ (اپنے رب سے) ڈرتا بھی ہے،

and fearfully,

while he fears [Allah],

and who has fear of God,

— Sarwar

فَاَنۡتَ عَنۡہُ تَلَہّٰی ﴿ۚ۱۰﴾

10

You neglect.

— Ahmedali

So you leave him, and are engrossed elsewhere!

— Ahmedraza

Him thou neglectest!

— Daryabadi

Of him you are neglectful and divert your attention to another,

— Hilali

To him you were inattentive.

— Itani

you pay no heed to him.

— Maududi

Of him you are neglectful and divert your attention to another.

— Mubarakpuri

From him thou art distracted.

— Pickthall

of him you were unmindful.

— Qaribullah

From him you are distracted.

— Sahih

From him will you divert yourself.

— Shakir

you pay him no heed.

— Wahiduddin

Of him wast thou unmindful.

— Yusufali

تو آپ اس سے بےاعتنائی برتتے ہیں

— عبدالماجد دریابادی

تو آپ اس سے غفلت برتتے ہیں

— عبدالرحمٰن کیلانی

تو تو اس سے بےتوجہی کرتا ہے۔

— عبدالسلام بھٹوی

تو اسے چھوڑ کر اور طرف مشغول ہوتے ہو،

— احمد رضا خان

تو تم اس سے بےپروائی برتتے ہو

— امین احسن اصلاحی

تو اس سے آپ ﷺ استغناء برت رہے ہیں۔

اس سے تم بےرخی کرتے ہو

تو اس سے بےرخی برتتا ہے

اس کی طرف سے تم بےپروائی برتتے ہو۔

اس سے تم بے رخی برتتے ہو

تو آپ اُس سے بے توجہی فرما رہے ہیں،

to him thou payest no heed.

you are neglectful of him.

you ignore him.

— Sarwar

کَلَّاۤ اِنَّہَا تَذۡکِرَۃٌ ﴿ۚ۱۱﴾

11

Assuredly this is a reminder

— Ahmedali

Not this way – this is the advice.

— Ahmedraza

By no means! Verily it is an admonition.

— Daryabadi

Nay, (do not do like this), indeed it (these Verses of this Quran) are an admonition,

— Hilali

Do not. This is a Lesson.

— Itani

No indeed; this is only a Reminder.

— Maududi

Nay; indeed it is an admonition.

— Mubarakpuri

Nay, but verily it is an Admonishment,

— Pickthall

No indeed, this is a Reminder;

— Qaribullah

No! Indeed, these verses are a reminder;

— Sahih

Nay! surely it is an admonishment.

— Shakir

Indeed, this [Quran] is an admonition.

— Wahiduddin

By no means (should it be so)! For it is indeed a Message of instruction:

— Yusufali

ہرگز ایسا نہ کیجئے۔ قرآن تو بس ایک نصیحت ہے

— عبدالماجد دریابادی

ایسا ہرگز نہیں چاہیے۔ یہ (قرآن) تو ایک نصیحت ہے

— عبدالرحمٰن کیلانی

ایسا ہرگز نہیں چاہیے، یہ (قرآن) تو ایک نصیحت ہے۔

— عبدالسلام بھٹوی

یوں نہیں یہ تو سمجھانا ہے

— احمد رضا خان

ہرگز نہیں، یہ تو ایک یاددہانی ہے

— امین احسن اصلاحی

ایسا ہرگز نہ کیجیے یہ تو ایک یاد دہانی ہے۔

دیکھو یہ (قرآن) نصیحت ہے

یہ ٹھیک نہیں قرآن تو نصیحت (کی چیز) ہے

ہرگزا یسا نہیں چاہیے۔ یہ قرآن تو ایک نصیحت ہے۔

ہرگز نہیں، یہ تو ایک نصیحت ہے

(اے حبیبِ مکرّم!) یوں نہیں بیشک یہ (آیاتِ قرآنی) تو نصیحت ہیں،

No indeed; it is a Reminder

No indeed! These [verses of the Quran ] are a reminder

These verses are a reminder

— Sarwar

فَمَنۡ شَآءَ ذَکَرَہٗ ﴿ۘ۱۲﴾

12

For any one who desires to bear it in mind,

— Ahmedali

So whoever wishes may remember it.

— Ahmedraza

So whosoever willeth-let him be admonished therewlth.

— Daryabadi

So whoever wills, let him pay attention to it.

— Hilali

Whoever wills, shall remember it.

— Itani

So whoso wills may give heed to it.

— Maududi

So, whoever wills, let him pay attention to Him (it).

— Mubarakpuri

So let whosoever will pay heed to it,

— Pickthall

and whosoever wills, shall remember it.

— Qaribullah

So whoever wills may remember it.

— Sahih

So let him who pleases mind it.

— Shakir

Let him who will, pay heed to it.

— Wahiduddin

Therefore let whoso will, keep it in remembrance.

— Yusufali

سو جس کا جی چاہے اسے قبول کرے۔

— عبدالماجد دریابادی

جو چاہے اسے یاد رکھے

— عبدالرحمٰن کیلانی

تو جو چاہے اسے قبول کرلے۔

— عبدالسلام بھٹوی

یقیناً اس (نافرمان انسان) نے وہ (حق) پورا نہ کیا جس کا اسے (اللہ نے) حکم دیا تھا،

But when the Shout cometh

لِکُلِّ امۡرِیًٴ مِّنۡہُمۡ یَوۡمَئِذٍ شَاۡنٌ یُّغۡنِیۡہِ ﴿ؕ۳۷﴾

37

Each man will have enough cares that day.

— Ahmedali

On that day, each one has just one issue, which is enough for him.

— Ahmedraza

For every one of them on that Day shall be business enough to occupy

— Daryabadi

Everyman, that Day, will have enough to make him careless of others.

— Hilali

Every one of them, on that Day, will have enough to preoccupy him.

— Itani

on that Day each will be occupied with his own business, making him oblivious of all save himself.

— Maududi

Every man that Day will have enough to make him careless of others.

— Mubarakpuri

Every man that day will have concern enough to make him heedless (of others).

Everyone on that Day will have affairs to keep him occupied.

For every man, that Day, will be a matter adequate for him.

Every man of them shall on that day have an affair which will occupy him.

on that Day every man among them will have enough concern of his own --

Each one of them, that Day, will have enough concern (of his own) to make him indifferent to the others.

ان میں سے ہر شخص کو اس وقت اپنی ہی پڑی ہوگی دوسروں سے بےتوجہ کردینے والی۔

اس دن ہر شخص کی ایسی حالت ہوگی جو اسے (دوسروں سے) بےپروا بنادے گی

Many faces will that day be bright,

Many a face will be glittering on that day.

Faces on that Day shall be beaming,

Some faces that Day, will be bright (true believers of Islamic Monotheism).

Faces on that Day will be radiant.

— Itani

Some faces on that Day shall be beaming with happiness,

Some faces that Day will be bright,

On that day faces will be bright as dawn,

Some faces will shine,

[Some] faces, that Day, will be bright -

Laughing, rejoicing at good news (of Paradise).

and be cheerful and joyous.

And many will be dust-begrimed,

And many a face will be covered with dust on that day.

And faces on that Day! upon them shall be gloom.

And other faces, that Day, will be dust-stained;

And Faces on that Day will be covered with misery.

Some faces on that Day shall be dust-ridden,

And other faces that Day will be dust-stained.

And other faces, on that day, with dust upon them,

whereas some faces will be covered with dust

And [other] faces, that Day, will have upon them dust.

And (many) faces on that day, on them shall be dust,

اور (بہت سے) چہروں پر اس روز سیاہی ہوگی

Covered with the blackness (of shame):

Blackness overcoming them.

Dust shall cover them

Darkness will cover them,

Overwhelmed by remorse.

enveloped by darkness.

— Maududi

Darkness will cover them.

Veiled in darkness,

and veiled with darkness.

Blackness will cover them.

Darkness shall cover them.

and overcast with gloom:

Blackness will cover them:

(اور) سیاہی چھا رہی ہوگی

اُولٰٓئِکَ ہُمُ الۡکَفَرَۃُ الۡفَجَرَۃُ ﴿٪۴۲﴾

42

They will be the unbelievers, transgressors.

— Ahmedali

It is they, the disbelievers, the sinners.

— Ahmedraza

Those! they are the infidels, the ungodly.

— Daryabadi

Such will be the Kafarah (disbelievers in Allah, in His Oneness, and in His Messenger Muhammad (Peace be upon him), etc.), the Fajarah (wicked evil doers).

— Hilali

These are the faithless, the vicious.

— Itani

These will be the unbelievers, the wicked.

— Maududi

Such will be the disbelieving, the wicked evil doers.

— Mubarakpuri

Those are the disbelievers, the wicked.

— Pickthall

Those, they are the unbelievers, the immoral.

— Qaribullah

Those are the disbelievers, the wicked ones.

— Sahih

These are they who are unbelievers, the wicked.

— Shakir

those will be ones who denied the truth and were immersed in iniquity.

Such will be the Rejecters of Allah, the doers of iniquity.

یہی لوگ تو ہیں کافر فاجر۔

یہ وہ لوگ ہوں گے جو کافر اور بدکردار ہیں۔

یہی ہیں جو کافر ہیں، نافرمان ہیں۔
